Kevkhishvili Wins Shot Put Title; Four Gators All-AmericaPublished by
Kevkhishvili Wins Shot Put Title; Four Gators All-America Junior Florida thrower Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) on Thursday became the first woman since the 2005 campaign to win both the indoor and outdoor NCAA shot put titles in the same season, when she captured the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Shot Put Championship with a throw of 58-4.50/17.79m. Kevkhishvili’s victory marked one of four All-America honors for the Gators on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas. Sophomore thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) finished third in the men’s shot put, junior jumper Shara Proctor (The Valley, Anguilla) was sixth in the women’s long jump, and freshman decathlete Gray Horn finished 11th overall and seventh among Americans in the decathlon, as all three of those Gators earned All-America honors. “I thought we had another great day today,” Florida head coachMike Holloway said. “You come in here and hope everything goes your way, but that’s not always how it works. We’ve got some good qualifiers and we had Mariam win a national title and had three more All-Americans. We’ve set ourselves up to do some very special things. We just have to line up and get the job done.” Kevkhishvili captured the first NCAA outdoor shot put championship of her career, becoming the first person since former Gator Kimberli Barrett in 2005 to win both the indoor and outdoor titles in the same season. Kevkhishvili also is the two-time defending NCAA indoor shot put champion. Read the full article at: gatorzone.com
