When Southern Mississippi triple jumper Ganna Demydova emerged from the sand pit after her final attempt at the Conference USA Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Tad Gormley Stadium, even she was surprised by the outcome. Demydova, a Ukrainian, set a conference record with a wind-aided jump of 14.03 meters (46 feet, one-half inch), only to follow it with the world’s 14th-best jump of the year, 13.89.

Conference USA does not factor wind aid in its results.

Demydova claimed the title for the second consecutive year.

“I’m too excited,” said Demydova, who is an indoor and outdoor All-American. “That’s the first time I broke the 14-meter mark. I’m aiming for the Ukrainian team and the A-mark is 14.30, so I’m getting close.”
