NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Friday that Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry was named the 2010 National Men’s Head Coach of the Year and the 2010 National Women’s Head Coach of the Year for outdoor track & field in Division I as voted by the nation’s coaches. Henry guided Texas A&M to a second-consecutive sweep of NCAA team titles at the recent NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Henry’s women’s squad won the NCAA crown with a 72-point tally, 15 more than nearest contender Oregon, and the most in meet history since 2002 when South Carolina won with 82 points. The men’s team won their national crown by a single point, garnering 55 points to Florida’s 54.

The double-team national crown in consecutive years has happened only one other time in Division I. Henry coached the LSU squads that accomplished the same double-double titles in 1989-1990.

As it turned out, the one event win for the Aggie men, the 4×400-meter relay, proved critical to the cause as the 10 points gained gave Texas A&M a “clubhouse” score of 55 with the long jump still to finish. The lineup of Bryan Miller, Demetrius Pinder, Curtis Mitchell, and Tabarie Henry held off Mississippi State to finish in 3:00.89 for Texas A&M’s first outdoor national title in the event since 1989.

In all, the A&M men had 11 scoring performances at the NCAA Championships, ranging from the 100 to 400 meters, the 4×400, javelin, triple jump, and decathlon.

On the women’s side, Texas A&M notched event crowns in the 4×100 and 200 meters. Senior Porscha Lucas clocked 22.83 in the final to take the national championship in the 200 for the second-straight year. The 4×100 team of Jeneba Tarmoh, Lucas, Dominique Duncan, and Jessica Beard captured the Aggies’ fourth-consecutive national crown with a 42.82 run in the finals.

The Aggie women tallied 12 scoring performances at the national meet, with points carded in the 100, 200, 400, 100 hurdles, 4×100, 4×400, triple jump, and javelin.

Texas A&M’s women also won their fourth-straight Big 12 title earlier in the season.
