Newly minted collegiate record holder Savannah Sutherland of Michigan stops by to chat with DyeStat's Keenan Gray on the latest episode of DyeStat Discussions to about her historic 400-meter hurdles race at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships, where she ran 52.46 seconds to break Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's collegiate record. Born in Borden, Saskatchewan, Canada, Sutherland talks about what it was like growing up in a town of 300 people and how she found a love for track and field through high school. From there, she would go on to qualify for her first World U20 Championships in 2021 in the 400 hurdles, earning bronze in Nairobi. Sutherland joined the Michigan program in fall of 2022 and became an immediate impact in the program. She earned several All-American honors, won a handful of Big Ten conference titles and became one of the most prominent names at the NCAA level over her collegiate career. After winning her first 400 hurdle NCAA title in Austin, Texas, Sutherland returned to the world stage in 2023 when she qualified for her first Canadian senior team at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. A year later, she made her first Olympic team and went all the way to the 400 hurdle final, finishing seventh. Sutherland's final collegiate season with Michigan began with winning the Big Ten indoor 400 title, followed by earning All-American honors at nationals in Virginia Beach. In the outdoor scene, she would go on to win a third Big Ten outdoor title in the 400 hurdles, qualify for another NCAA Championships, and ultimately break the collegiate record in the final to not only win her second NCAA title but solidify herself at the greatest female 400 hurdler in NCAA history.
