Sacred Heart grad golden for Villanova
Opponents may be able to keep up with Sheila Reid. They just can’t match her finishing kick.
The Newmarket resident once again moved to the head of the class with a pair of stellar performances at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships on the weekend to win the 1,500 and 5,000 metre races at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Reid, a fourth-year junior at Philadelphia’s Villanova University, became the first woman to combine for the 1,500 and 5,000 titles in NCAA history at the same nationals meet when she rushed from the pack in the final 200 metres Saturday to win the 1,500. One day earlier, the same tactic took her to victory in the 5,000.
Reid, who turns 22 in August, overtook Oregon’s Jordan Hasay with 200 metres to go and put the race away with a final burst on the straightaway to finish in a time of four minutes, 14.57 seconds. Stony Brook’s Lucy Van Dalen finished second in 4:15.33.
