Women's Day 1 Predictions

Published by Adam Schneider/RunnerSpace.com/college editor on June 11, 2015

Men's Decathlon 10:00 AM - Maicel Uibo of Georgia is a day 2 guy and unless some spectacular marks happen he will win. Mike Morgan of Buffalo and Dakota Keys are also good day 2 guys and they will battle with day 1 leader and Pac-12 champion Pau Tonneson of Arizona.

Women's Heptathlon 12:00 PM- Akela Jones of Kansas State was first or second in every event of the first day of the Heptathlon and scored 4023 points which puts her in contention for the collegiate record.  Although she is a spectacular long jumper (near 7 meters) she is not good in the javelin throw (35 meters) or 800 meters (2:21 pr).  She should score (with a mark of 6.50m in the long jump) over 6400 and she will challenge the record held by Brianne Theissen (6441) with the current javelin implement.

Women's Hammer Throw 1:30 PM - Brooke Pleger of Bowling Green (69.72m, 228-9 is her season best) has been consistent and in ther last three meet she has thrown over 225' and I think she will win.  Julia Ratcliffe of Princeton (68.53m, 224-10 is her season best) is the defending champion and she will attempt to keep Princeton's streak of 43 years of having at least one NCAA champion.  Oregon's Jillian Weir (64.41m, 211-4) has been training well and there is a rumor that she could throw 70m at this meet.

Women's Long Jump 5:15 PM - Quanesha Burks of Alabama (6.84m, 22-5 1/4) has looked very good this year and it will make it difficult for Jenna Prandini of Oregon 6.41m, 21-0 1/2 season best, 6.65m 21-9 3/4 indoor pr) to repeat.  One jumps expert thinks it will take at least 6.80m to win. Outside of Burks there is no outstanding mark so I think she wins with Prandini second and Jasmine Todd of Oregon possibly third.

Women's Shot Put 5:40 PM - Southern Illinois throws coach John Smith is one of the best in the country and she should have freshman Raven Saunders (18.23m 59-9 3/4) ready for another big throw.  Tori Bliss of LSU (18.49m, 60-8) will challenge her like she did at the NCAA Indoor Championships.  Not to be forgotten is 2014 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Christina Hillman of Iowa State (17.45m, 57-3) who sets up her season to only peak for this meet.  This could be an outstanding competition. Don't be surprised to see a big throw by Pac-12 champion Brittany Mann of Oregon *(17.24m, 56-6 3/4) as she has only truly peaked for this meet.

Women's 10,000m 6:38 PM - Arkansas' Dominique Scott has been the best distance runner since racing on the track started this winter.  Without Emily Sisson of Providence (indoor collegiate 5000m record holder on a banked track) and 2014 NCAA cross country champion Kate Avery of Iona this race is down to one challenger that has a true chance, defending champion Emma Bates of Boise State. Scott should win this race with her superior speed at the end (4:12.16 to 4:16.37 superiority in 1500m personal records).
